Given that observations are recorded per country, there is a further element that characterises countries and that may potentially be an explanatory variable in the analytical part of this study. Such an element is the colonial heritage linking countries suffering a serious crisis and one or more EU Member States. Information about colonial heritage (Riddell, 2007) is provided with reference to different historical references, such as The Map as History (2011), the Atlante Storico (2011) and the ICOW Project Data (Hensel, 2007). Such sources provide an in-depth overview of the past imperialism of some of the European Union Member States and their colonies. They then allow recording if a country affected by a crisis, and possibly receiving some aid from the EU or the Member States, share a historical tie with its donor and has previously been a colony. Moreover, it also indicates which Member State was the former colonial power.
